FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
TORONTO, September 9, 2017 The Rexall OneWalk to Conquer Cancer announces 3,003 participants raise $6,078,000 for Princess Margaret Cancer Centre as the event commenced on Saturday. Funds raised through the Rexall OneWalk to Conquer Cancer support Personalized Cancer Medicine at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, one of the top five cancer research centres in the world.
“Nearly one in two Canadians will develop cancer in their lifetime and the funds raised through the Rexall OneWalk continue to help Princess Margaret Cancer Centre make transformational advances in Personalized Cancer Medicine for patients here in Toronto, throughout Ontario, across Canada and around the globe,” said Paul Alofs, President and CEO of The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation.
“The 2017 Rexall OneWalk commemorates 15 years of walking to conquer cancer. Since 2003, this outstanding community of walkers, sponsors, donors, crew and volunteers have raised $168 million for Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. The Princess Margaret has the largest cancer research and clinical program in Canada and as global leaders in cancer care, our world-leading medical teams treat over 200 types of cancers, including the rarest forms of the disease. We are able to transform standards of care, deliver new treatments and lead the way in Personalized Cancer Medicine because of the funds raised through events like the Rexall OneWalk. Thank you to everyone involved, we are so proud and grateful of the ongoing commitment within our community,” Alofs added.
The 2017 Rexall OneWalk is a 15, 25 or 40-kilometre walk throughout Toronto that brings together communities of survivors and their supporters who spend months fundraising and training in order to participate. The Rexall OneWalk allows participants to choose their distance and to fundraise in support of the type of cancer that matters most to them.
“Since 2003, I have been walking to conquer cancer in this lifetime and I will continue to walk throughout Canada’s most diverse city in honour of my mom, Roma,” said Annette Mincer, 15-time participant from Toronto.
“My mom was diagnosed with breast cancer at 60 and underwent treatment at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. This year, my mom turns 84, and still, she’s Team Roma’s Roses’ biggest supporter. I started walking in the event by myself, but over the last decade and a half, the Rexall OneWalk has become a family affair. Without The Princess Margaret, my mom may not be here at the event today, making appearances at Cheer Stations and the Finish Line, smiling, spreading joy and giving back. Thanks to The Princess Margaret, I’ve been given more time with my mom and I couldn’t be more grateful,” Mincer added.
Rexall came on board in 2016 as the event’s title sponsor. Rexall’s support is vital to the success of OneWalk and will enable The Princess Margaret to invest more funds raised into their core cancer research programs.
“We are thrilled to be the title partner of OneWalk to Conquer Cancer, honouring our community’s personal connections to cancer and The Princess Margaret,” said Domenic Pilla, CEO McKesson Canada.
“Team Rexall has worked together to fundraise and train, because we all believe in giving back and raising critical funds for The Princess Margaret. Our staff works with cancer patients, and their families, across the country and we hope more people will walk in 2018, to raise crucial funds for ongoing cancer research and discoveries. Despite losses and challenges we all face, each and every one of us has continued to walk on because walking together to conquer cancer will improve life for patients and their loved ones, everywhere,” Pilla added.
The Rexall OneWalk has announced new route options for the 2018 event. On Friday of the event weekend, participants may choose to walk in the new 15-kilometre Night Walk throughout downtown Toronto. On Saturday, participants may also select to walk the 15, 25 or 40-kilometre route. Walkers hoping to conquer an even bigger challenge can complete the Two Day, Your Way option, completing both the 15-kilometre Friday Night Walk and any of the Saturday distances, for an up to 55-kilometre journey.
The 2018 event will take place September 7 and 8. To register for the new Night Walk, 15, 25 or 40-kilometres walk, register at www.onewalk.ca or call 416-815-9255.
